Ali Omar Omar 1 Mr.Brown AP World History March 28, 2014 Japan and China had many different responses to western hegemony in the nineteenth century. This included isolation which both countries attempted to stay isolated but Japan was more successful, economic interactions; economically Japan prospered while China did not and Japan adopted many western styles while China did not. During this period Japan rose to become a dominant power in Asia and the world while China was experiencing the age of humiliation. This may because Japan had accepted many western ideas and China had not. Both countries tried to stay isolated from the world to avoid conflict. Until about 1830- 1860 when the west forced openings between the two countries. The west wanted to trade with Japan and China because they had goods and products that they wanted and they had a strong economy. Japan allowed 1 ship from the Netherland each year because they did not want any missionaries coming to convert them. Trading took place in an artificial small Island named
