“Maybellene” o written and recorded by Chuck Barry, 1955 o Rock ‘n’ Roll: origins: DJ (Disc Jockey): someone who plays records for an audience, on the radio or live DJ Alan Freed in Cleveland, early 1950s, hosts radio show aimed at teenagers Promotes black R&B records on air, calling the music “rock ‘n’ roll” Rock ‘n’ roll” comes to refer to music pitched at teen audience from ca. 1954-1959 Attitude, attitude, attitude Lyrics targeting teen interests: cars, dancing, jukeboxes, dislike of school, etc. The term “rock ‘n’ roll” (like the term “jazz”) was slang for sex before it became associated with a music style o 1950s Teenager Culture Post-WWII baby boom produced many teens by late 1950s Economic prosperity of 1950s put money into teens’ hands… …purchasing power makes teens a valuable marketing demographic for first time Political conservatism and social conformity of 1950s make the appearance of rebellion appealing to teens
