ESM 266: Remote Sensing of Environment Homework 3, MODIS ocean color Jeff Dozier & Karl Rittger April 14, 2008 Due April 22, 2008 Objectives Download MODIS ocean-color data and analyze using ENVI Background NASA maintains an online repository for MODIS data, which are also available from other sources. These data are made available as .hdf files ( hierarchical data format ). Each .hdf file can contain one or many science data sets (SDSs). We will be specifically interested in the ocean chlorophyll concentration data set. ENVI is not able to read these .hdf files as they are, so we have to convert them to a com- patible format. This is not straightforward, and you’ll have to put on your nerd hat to do this. ENVI is directly connected to a programming language called IDL (Interactive Data Language). Notice that every time you open ENVI, there is a second window opened called IDL. IDL can read just about any file type that you throw at it, as long as you know the right tricks. Once the data are in IDL, ENVI
