Critical essay In the United States, colleges have a long list in which they check if potential students have the necessary qualifications in which to be accepted. Although academics should be the deciding factor in which a student may be accepted, some may get preferential treatment due to their ethnicity. In the essay “Should Race Be a Factor in College Admissions” Edward Curry, argues that racial preferences in college admissions is necessary and helps “even the playing field” when it comes to college admissions. In this essay, I will argue that Curry makes a good argument and is convincing. Curry’s basic argument is summarized as follows: 1. Historically disadvantaged races and ethnicities continue to feel the effects of discrimination 2. Forty percent of black and Hispanic school aged children attend segregated schools that leave them unprepared for employment and higher education. 3.
