42 Site Assessment and Characterization Design of a Sampling Plan – Any sampling plan is limited by available funds – Resist pressure to collect the least number of samples: • Cheaper to obtain the samples/information correctly and sufficiently the first time • More expensive to go into risk assessment & remediation design with bad/incomplete information – May require a second sampling program – New data may actually show a very different situation…

43 Site Assessment and Characterization • Type of pollutants potentially present will guide the design of the sampling program: – Immobile pollutants (e.g. PCBs and most metals in silty or clayey materials) will be found in soils near the source – Mobile compounds (e.g. organic solvents in sands) may have migrated significantly and require more extensive groundwater sampling – Bioaccumulation? Sample biota, sediments
