Stephanie Canora EAS 122 January 25, 2008 Mozambique Floods Type of Event: Floods Location: Mozambique (Caia and the rest of the Zambezi Valley) Date of Event: Early December to present day What happened: Due to tropical storms the Zambezi Revubue Rivers have been flooding for more than a month throughout Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. The biggest challenge that faces those affected by the storm is hygiene. With such large amounts of free standing water, choler and diarrhea have begun to spread. Also, people are at risk for diseases carried by mosquitoes.

Unformatted text preview: Impact of the Event: • The Mozambique navy has already brought 50,000 people to safety. • Thouasands of homes in Epworth are damaged. • As of January 22, 2008, 76,000 people have been displaced. • 21 people died leading up to January 24, 2008. To reduce the impact: I think that the best way to reduce the negative impact of future flooding in Mozambique is to better prepare the Mozambique for disasters of this nature.
