Surname 1 Name Instructor Course Date The Cask of Amontillado The cask of Amontillado is about a man who was taking revenge on a man. It is told in the first person narrative and the narrator is Montresor while the friend being led into the tomb is Fortunato. There seems to be bitter rivalry among the two of them and it is seems that Montresor was very upset with Fortunato and the only way he could feel better about it was if he could kill him. In this case, Montresor gets Fortunato very drunk and leads him to an underground tomb without his knowledge. During the entire walk in the passages, the two talk as if they are friends and fortunate has no idea what is happening or has any idea of the bad intentions that Montresor has towards him. As he goes ahead to throw the last stone to the tomb, he gets some sense of guilt but quickly dismisses it and leaves. Poe wrote the story as revenge and a response to one of the authors with whom they had bitter rivalry at the time. The two writers were bitter rivals and seemed to fight each other through their works. The cask of amontillado was written as a reference to one of his rival’s work where he was depicted as a drunkard and a very poor lover. Poe responded by making assumptions in the story such as the masons which was a secret group. The Cask of amontillado is considered one of the best writing Poe has ever written and it set him on the forefront of the literary community.
