Case Study #4 How would you explain a PDA to the parents? The artery that takes oxygenated blood to the body has connected to the artery that takes deoxygenated blood to the lungs (Pillitteri, 2014). Too much blood is going back to the lungs, causing an increase in pulmonary circulation, or blood that’s in the lungs (Pillitteri, 2014). What was the most likely cause of Samantha’s initial weight loss? Is it the PDA that caused the weight loss? The PDA can contribute to some of it, as it can cause them to not feed well and not gain weight (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2011). But it is normal for newborns to lose from 7% to 10% of their birth weight, but should gain it all back within the first two weeks after birth (Kids Health). What is the physiologic reason Samantha’s life span would be shortened if the PDA does not close or get surgical correction? Her life span is shortened because pulmonary artery hypertension and pulmonary vascular obstructive disease develop (Pillitteri, 2014).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
