It was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1954 and it has a total of 277 pages. The book follows Reverend Stephen Kumalo’s journey to Johannesburg, South Africa, from the village of Ndotsheni, to find his son and help his sickened sister who has a young son. While in Johannesburg, Reverend Stephen Kumalo finds out that his son has committed a crime against a white male, Arthur Jarvis, who was a white male speaking for racial injustice. This causes Arthur Jarvis’s father James Jarvis to explore the articles and speeches that Arthur had made on the topic of racial injustice and how he beseeched for a change in South Africa. One day, in the village of Ndotsheni, Reverend Stephen Kumalo received a letter stating that his sister Grendel Kumalo needed help due to the fact that she was very sick. Reverend Theophilus Msimangu requested that Reverend Stephen Kumalo go to the Mission House in Sophiatown, South Africa. Reverend Stephen Kumalo decided to go without his wife to Johannesburg to search for his son Absalom and help his sister Gertrude out. When Reverend Stephen Kumalo arrived in Johannesburg, he was met by Reverend Theophilus Msimangu. Msimangu provided Stephen Kumalo an accommodation and said he would help with the Stephen Kumalo’s expenditure. After settling in the house of Mrs. Lithebe, Stephen Kumalo and Msimangu went to go help Gertrude.
