Shortcomings of the Individual Decision Maker l Rational Economic Model Decision makers systematically search for alternatives. Select the “optimal” course of action. l Psychological Model People use heuristics, or “rules of thumb” that simplify the decision making process. Once bad decisions are made, people tend not to change course. Too many alternatives may also lead to bad decisions.

How Can these Problems be Corrected? l Solution proposed: Make decision makers accountable for their actions. l Accountability : Implicit or explicit expectation that one may be called on to justify one’s beliefs, feelings or actions to others. l Relevant in a wide variety of settings Healthcare, civil and criminal justice, business and especially politics .
