Assortative Mating: What do people look for in a romantic partner? OK Cupid Data o Their database should look like the rest of the population (law of large numbers) o People lie about their: Height (increased a couple of inches) Income (20% poorer on average than they say in OKCupid) Variation with age: below 20 – barely inflate income, but trend increases with age Appearance (some use older pictures rather than relatively recent pictures) o People tend to lie/exaggerate in areas potential partners might find appealing Assortative Mating o Humans/Animals don’t choose their partners randomly o Individuals tend to mate with individuals with similar phenotypes o Social scientists found evidence of assortative mating based on many variables: Ex: Education and Income Assortative Mating, Personality and Intelligence, Religion A very strong one is ideology, even more so than physical and personality traits o Ideological Assortative Mating
