Shannel Montiel 12/08/16 AP Lit. per. 6 Middlesex About nearly all that is taboo in society, Middlesex is a novel of dismissed controversies written by a fearless author, Jeffrey Eugenides. Published in 2002, Middlesex , narrated by an intersexual character, was further assistance to the progression of intersexual awareness that started fairly recently. The possession of several variations in sex characteristics, or intersexuality, was just realized to be a common condition in the late 1800s. Since that discovery, the community that was once remote was finally acknowledged and efforts to spread the awareness of intersexuality erupted during the late 20 th century. The 1900s brought television and television helped broadcast awareness for intersexuality; introduced in the 1950s, television was an incredible phenomenon and an ideal source for spreading the cause. In 1993, one of the most famous and fabulous icons on the LGBT+ community appeared on MTV, RuPaul. A drag queen, television host, and advocate for the queer community, he was a gleam of hope. Just two years after RuPaul’s fierce appearance on TV, intersexual adults began to speak publicly about protocols, or the dangerous attempts at treating intersexuality. Often at birth, and therefore nonconsensual, the fight to end sex reassignment surgery began in 1993; the year Jeffrey Eugenides finished his first novel and proceeded to write Middlesex .

Fearless of controversy, Jeffrey Eugenides does not shy from topics that can stir social pandemonium. Evidence to this can be found within the pages of his novels: Middlesex , The Marriage Plot , and The Virgin Suicides . His novels respectively interpret incest, intersexuality, homosexuality, mental illness, and suicide. Contrary to that, Jeffrey brings his work to life by involving himself or his experiences within his stories. Parallel to the narrator of Middlesex , he is from Greek descent, born in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to San Francisco in the midst of his youth.
