Use a Graphic Organizer, thinking map or equivalent to show the causes and effects of the 1837 Rebellion a. Causes of the 1837 Rebellion Effects of the 1837 Rebellion 1. The people of both colonies were able to elect representatives to the Legislative Assembly, but the Assembly did not have any power over the Legislative Council; the Council had the power to veto any decisions made by the Assembly, which angered many people as they had no voice in any decisions made 2. The Constitutional Act of 1791 created a constitution that gave all of the power to groups known as the Government Elite; in Upper Canada, the group was known as the Family Compact, and in Lower Canada, the group was called Chateau Clique. The groups of elites were appointed by the British Crown which meant the colonists had no say in who made up the 1. Both the Upper and Lower Canada revolts lead to the creation of the Durham Report which lead to the union of the two colonies. The Durham Report also created a more responsible government dominated by the English inhabitants of Canada. The colonists took control of the internal affairs and there was assimilation between the French speaking population. 2. The Act of Union was enacted in July 1840 and was proclaimed February 10,1841 and it abolished the legislatures of Lower Canada and Upper Canada and instead the Province of Canada was created in 1841. It was meant to assimilate the French population as Upper

In Upper Canada, the Family Compact supported the Church of England, though most of the colonists in Upper Canada were not a part of the Church; this caused political tension between the colonists and the government because of religious differences. 4. An economic decline started after the peace treaty was signed that ended the war between Britain and France; British North American supplied Europe with goods, and as the price of agricultural goods, such as lumber, the incomes of the colonists decreased as well.
