Siddharth Kumaran 6th An Analytical Examination: The 3rd Reich Understanding Causes: The Rise of the National Socialists 1. Why were the German people attracted to the National Socialists? The main reason the German people were attracted to the National Socialists was that they had no one else to turn to. To the eyes of the German people, the National Socialists were the only hope in helping them recover. The aftermath of WWI had devastating effects on Germany. The rise of the National Socialists can not be attributed to any one event, but a wide range of factors leading to their rise in popularity. The National Socialists were so popular to the majority of the German people mainly because they had proposed a solution for almost every problem that Germany was facing . Germany possessed many negative political, economical, and social characteristics that made them vulnerable to being manipulated by Hitler and his party. After WWI, Germany was hugely devastated economically. Germany was hugely in debt mainly because rather than taxing people to fund WWI, Germany decided to borrow money. Siddharth Kumaran 6th could have possibly made a recovery if it were not for the high protective tariffs on Germany’s goods. In fact, the German government had over 300 printing mills running 24 hours to print more currency. As a result, the German currency had gone through hyperinflation . Immediately, the real value of German marks had begun to fall drastically. Consequently, the price of goods and services rose astronomically. Inflation was so high that the price for a loaf of bread in Berlin rose from 0.63 marks in 1918 to about 201,000,000,000 marks by 1923. FOR A LOAF OF BREAD!!! At that point, Germany currency basically became worthless. In fact, the Germans decided to use their marks to build a fire or give to children as toys rather than use it to buy goods. People had begun to succumb to barter for goods rather than use the national currency. Furthermore, the Great Depression that hit the US in the 1930s caused the US to call back all of its foreign loans. At this point, Weimar Germany was completely destroyed. Unemployment rose to 7 million and caused Germany to collapse hardcore. At this point, the German Nationals started to target the economic weakness of Germany . The brilliantly minded Hitler and the National Socialists primarily exploited the weakness of the German PEOPLE . Hitler knew so keenly that people, especially in a financial crisis, are looking for someone or something to blame. As a result, the National Socialists had begun
