OB Essay Question Essay 1: Many people who research diversity in organizations refer to it as a “double-edged sword” because it can potentially have both positive and negative effects on a variety of performance outcomes. Please explain why diversity is a “double-edged” sword by describing both the advantages and disadvantages of having a diverse organization. Your answer should include 2 advantages associated with diversity and 3 disadvantages associated with diversity. For each advantage and disadvantage you list, please also explain why diversity has this effect. For instance, it is not enough to say that diversity causes social divisions without explaining why . Advantages Why Disadvantages Why - Value in Diversity Theory- diversity creates value and benefit for tea outcomes, even as it creates challenges for team- interaction processes - Conflict was the key variable - Diversity enhances problem solving through the presence of cognitive conflict or divergence of viewpoints - Alternative perspectives can lead to novel insights and solutions - - Tenure of team members hurts how a team works together - By coming on at different times the members of the organization have a different idea of what the organization is - Older managers who were more dissimilar to their subordinates were more likely to leave - Upper-echelons Theory- the physical and cognitive characteristics underlying observable demographic characteristics are critical to a group’s processes and subsequent decisions - Firms are more likely to undergo strategic changes in strategy when there is higher diversity on educational specialization - Tenure diversity had some beneficial effects on work- group processes - Similarity attraction theory- people tend to like people like themselves - People won’t be able to work with people different with them - People who are similar will continue to be brought into the organization igrnoing those that are different - - Minorities become the “out-group” - Stereotypes shape the expectations group members have about one

Essay 2: Demographic trends over the last twenty years strongly suggest that the modern workplace is becoming increasingly diverse over time. Many organizations are encountering difficulties with this transition because they do not know how to manage diversity so that they can capitalize on the benefits of a diverse workforce while avoiding the costs. If you were a management consultant hired by a firm with a diverse and dysfunctional workforce, what advice could you give them about how to solve the problem.
