Kilby King FAVA 1/11/08 Written Assignment #2: Georgia O’Keeffe 1. Georgia O’Keefe is the first artist to bring to her work the true essence and experience of womanhood. She was born on a farm in Wisconsin. She had few art trainings at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1916 O’Keefe trusted one of her friend in New York by not to show the drawings to anyone. Unfortunately, her friend ruined her trust and she took the drawings to Stieglitz whose is the famed photographer and art dealer. During that time, he included Georgia O’Keeffe in-group show at “291” since he was stunned by her work and in 1917 he gave her a solo exhibition. Then Georgia moved to New York and Stieglitz left with his wife and lived with her and got married in 1924. Unfortunately, they got separated and Georgia treasured her husband’s presence but could paint at her best only in the Southwest and Stieglitz still wanted her paintings for his gallery.
