Properly assessing substance abuse addiction is very vital to an individual’s overall. Substance abuse can co-occur with other issues such as mental– illnesses and can be onset by traumatizing experiences. In the case scenario, Marifel a 19-year-old Pilipino woman moved to the United States with her parents when she was2 years old. She has many relatives in the United States including aunts, uncles, and cousins andsome extended family members in the Philippines. Marifel was a happy person who was able to enjoy time with friends and family. Last summer, Marifel was in a boating accident. Marifel was enjoying a high school graduation celebration with friends at a nearby lake when the accident occurred. The boat that Marifel was in struck a rock beneath the surface of the water ata high rate of speed. This caused the boat to crash into a nearby pier. Marifel suffered severe injuries to her back and legs where she had to endure multiple surgeries. Marifel survived but one of Marifel’s friends died from her injuries on the night the accident occurred. During Marifel’s recovery from the accident, she started to rely heavily on opiate medications that were initially prescribed for pain management. As time passed, Marifel’s injuries healed, but Marifel found that the opiates provided helped block the pain she felt associated with the loss of her friend and memories of the accident. Mariel’s physician ceased Marife’s supply of opiate use after Marifel’s physical injuries were healed. Marifel found other contacts who could supply the pills for a price on the street.
