The Middle Colonies Praying towns (New England)  Metacom’s war/king philip’s war (NE) Iroquois Confederacy Navigation Acts 1651, 1660, 1663 Covenant chain William penn Quakers Lenni lenape Midterm next Monday: study guide on webct this afternoon 1) Northern Indians a puritans a) 1650s- dwindling Indian pop and inc. puritan pop i) Puritans want to make religious conversion more important in puritan/Indian  relationship ii) Puritans began constructing  “praying towns (1) Modern day reservation (2) Massachusetts only constructs praying towns – 14 max in pop 1674 (3) Indians: give up own religion and make strides to become a good Christian; live  life like new English – wear hair like eng. Dress like them farm like them give up  everything about who you were as an Indian and try to become English (4) Praying towns is a good way to stay on your own land base if you are from a  weaker Indian tribe (so you don’t have to move) (5) Powerful Indian groups want to keep their own land base – hate praying towns iii) 1675-1676 most devastating war =  Metacom/King Philip’s War  named after Indian  leader b/c English cannot pronounce his Indian name call him king Philip (1) Metacom is leader of Wampanoag  tribe (2) 1675 – 3 young Wampanoag warriors are tried for a murder of a praying town  Indian and found guilty and executed (a) Lots of their fellow warriors are mad and attack puritan colonial settlements  which inspired other indians  (b) English like to blame one indiv. And single out Metacom/King Philip (leader of  Wampanoag) there really is no central leader (c) 1675 colonies = 90  the Indians attack 52/90 towns and completely destroyed
