The English in the Chesapeake West country colonial promoters Black legend- Spanish Roanoke Headright system Opechancanough o Spanish controlled everything up until the 1500s o By 1580s England stepped up game to get involved in colonization o Queen Elizabeth didn’t want to fund colony ($$$) Granted a license so someone could run a colony as a business Sought to colonize Virginia/Chesapeake  o Social structure (pyramid) Top = aristocracy (nobility/rich) 5% pp Middle = “middling sort”/ middle class (some money/property/skilled labor/ farmers/shop owners) Bottom = “lower sort” serfs (no land SUCKS) criminals (thieves debt  unemployed)  sturdy beggars  (no desire to get job) By 1580s sturdy beggars show up more and more and worry those who  have property 1. Colonial promoters and Roanoke a. Take sturdy beggars put them on ships and send them across Atlantic and have  them start new colony b. Make them leave England, put them to work (they have a job now), make them  grown something and create wealth for England c. Beggars need stuff for colony so they buy stuff from English businesses d. Black legend west country colonial promoters  create story about Spanish i. Don’t worry about Indians they will welcome you, want you to come over
