Resistance Becomes Revolution Stamp Act Townshed Acts Intolerable Acts First Continental Congress Bunker Hill Thomas Paine and  Common Sense 1. Stamp Act Crisis a. Stamp Act 1765 i. Make colonists pay for stamp tax in Britain ii. Britain decide to put stamp tax onto colonists iii. Stamp tax applies for any printed document (land deeds, wills, etc.,  needed to be stamped and official) iv. Why would they be upset 1. Left so they wouldn’t have to pay extra in Britain 2. What would they get in return? (kicked French out) 3. Pitt said empire would fund the war 4. American’s have a sense of American identity now not British 5. No taxation without representation v. American’s worried because the tax could go up whenever the Empire felt  necessary b. Americans i. British think they’re doing well but they're not doing as well as they were  20 years ago ii. Economic struggle in the colonies and worrying where the tax could lead iii. Have colonial leaders that are accustomed running the show and don’t  like that they're being told what to do iv. Rebellion 1. Refuse to pay the tax 2. Protest through demonstrations, violence, written, burn effigies,  publish hate in pamphlets 3. Boycott the products the tax applies to v. In stamp act gets violent demonstrations vi. Protest stamp act before its law, when its law, people accept and want to  become stamp collector b/c they get a cut c. Boston i. Colonial city that violently protests the stamp act

Aug 1765 – go to AO’s office and dismantle his office  2. Load all wood on wagons and take it to AO’s house and pile it and  set it on fire 3. AO flees his house before bonfire 4. Break into his house, dismantle his house break all the windows  pulled out the furniture break into his liquor cabinet and burned it  all in the front yard iv. 12 days after attacking AO colonists go to Chief Justice’s house Thomas
