The American Revolution and Its Limits Saratoga Joseph Brant Dunmore’s Proclamation Treaty of Paris, 1783 Republican Motherhood 1. Fighting the War a. Americans constantly run away so Washington was never captured b. If they caught the army, the war would be over c. Only capture British troops on 2 occasions i. Oct 1777 Saratoga Northern New York 1. British are surrounded and surrender 5000 troops 2. Don’t just get people get all of their weapons 3. Turning point in the war 4. Up until this point, France is just waiting to get into the action 5. Began to get into the war because only 1 victory was good enough for them ii. Changes 1. Royal navy is not only navy on ocean France is now on the ocean 2. Now you can get stuff from France (supplies) 3. France wants to take war global (attack British possessions everywhere) 4. Spain also enters the war but do everything they can to hurt British 2. Native Americans and the War a. Help British b/c they're taking their land i. British are only military force b. Americans are the ones that keep moving west i. Can only have liberty if they are independent ii. Don’t care about Indians b/c they're in their way c. Indians i. Already have control of lives ii. Have own land base iii. Have own liberty/freedom iv. Want to keep all this so need to fight against Americans v. Joseph Brant adopted Christianity and got a European name
