Unformatted text preview: Sociology Exam 1 Notes August 30, 2007 Gender is not only socially taught, we as adults and older people are the teachers, but that teaching is coercive. There is not free choice in the process of coercive teaching. If we really believed that gender was biological it wouldn’t matter what a little boy wore or a little girl wore. We would not have to be coercive teachers. Social norms are so powerful that you risk physical assault if you violate them. We always need to be aware of the assumptions of the points that we make. Being gay is bad. Being masculine is equated with heterosexuality. September 4, 2007 Gender and Biology o Kessler- Inter-sexed Social Construction of Gender o Lorber- “Doing Gender” o Foner- “Freedom and Gender” o Thorne- “Gender Play” Socialization o Berger- Social Control Biology o Until the 18 th Century, it was believed that there was only one gender. o The genitals were mirror images of each other. o Y chromosome- Given by man. o Sometimes children are born without distinct parts o 2% of children are like this. Children were allowed to remain the way they were and get to choose which gender they would be. If a surgical route was decided, doctors looked to see if they could get a functioning uterus. On the other hand doctors looked for penis size if they wanted it to be male. • It’s all about reproduction. o The idea that there are natural genders gets confused by the social training of male or female. o Predispositions have a biological component. Music reading may be a predisposition that may never develop if your social world denies you music sheets to practice with. o When you have biologically distinct categories you are able to draw a line through the middle and separate the two distinctly . o Women have more fat to muscle ratio than men. o Biology constructs categories by being able to easily separate. Social Construction of Gender o What happens to make it wrong for a baby boy to where a dress? o Gender hierarchy- Who has more power, resources, privilege. o Doing gender means conforming or not conforming to the views of society pertaining to gender. o In Thorne’s observations at elementary schools, we teach gender through institutions, family, politics, home. o She learned that through education institutions we separate by gender. For example, bathrooms in school. Socialization—Social Control o Gender Norms are a form of social control. o Institutions establish these. Schools, home, etc…. o Socialization becomes a powerful force of social control. o In this sense, social control can be expressed in social violence.
