History – Essay Questions 1. The process of reconstruction and its outcomes. Be able to explain the issues, the nature of presidential reconstruction (self-reconstruction), how it operated in the South and why that led the north to change is policy to that of Congressional Reconstruction. Then be able to explain how congressional reconstruction played out in Washington and particularly in the south, in politics as well as in economics. Finally, be able to explain why reconstruction ended as it did. a. Process of Reconstruction and its outcomes i. After the ratification of the 13 th amendment abolishing slavery, the nation faced the huge task of reconstructing and reuniting a war ravaged south while transforming ex-slaves into free workers and equal citizens ii. Many white southerners resisted efforts to “reconstruct” their region iii. This is one of the most significant periods in U.S. History iv.The most difficult issue: What would be the political, social, and economicstatus of the freed slaves? Were they citizens? If not, what was their status as Americans? 1. To become self reliant as soon as possible 2. Being able to control their labor, reunite with their family members, gain education for their children, enjoy full participation in political life, and create their own community organizations and social life. 3. Keys: land, schools, preserve their families, independence from plantations 4. Many whites were determined to prevent this from happening vi. What did white land holders want: 1. Land 2.
