Roberts 1 Matt Roberts Dr. Fay Chemistry 113 7 February 2017 Introduction: The focus of this experiment is the determination of a chemical reactions equilibrium state, which can be defined by its equilibrium constant, Kc. With the chemical reaction occurring between the (Fe 3+ ) and the (SCN - ) ions can be determined by using Kc=[Product]/[Reactant]. In order to fulfill the purpose of the lab, finding the value of Kc, the molar concentration of the three species in solution at equilibrium is measured using a colorimeter. The amount of light that is absorbed by the colored solution is relative to it’s concentration, analyses being done at 470 nm wavelength. Experimental: Part one of the experiment begins with the set-up of five 100mL beakers and collecting 25 mL (.200M Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ), 14 mL (.0020 M SCN - ), and 250 mL (distilled water). The use of the Logger Pro program, on the desktop, and the Vernier Colorimeter is required to find the absorbance values of the five different solutions mixed, Table 1. Calibrate the colorimeter with a cuvette of distilled water. Then, before testing each solution rinse the cuvette twice with 1
