Soil Science 325: Pedology Homework Exercise 4 The following pages contain diagrams with brief soils descriptions and taxonomic categories for four landscapes. Each landscape has a slightly different factor emphasis. Use the book, your class/laboratory notes and internet resources to assist in describing the formation processes and to address the following questions for the soils in these landscapes. It may help you to visualize the relationships by writing/drawing on the diagrams. The exercise is due Thursday, Nov. 11 and you may submit the write-ups either as an e-mail attachment or as hard copy (due by 4:00 PM). 1. The Newson-Meehan-Dawson-Loxley association A. Discuss the drainage differences related to topography between Plainfield-Friendship- Meehan-Loxley soils and how this contributes to soil formation. B. Using what you know of the formative elements of the Soil Taxonomy name, describe the major features of two of the soil series in this landscape. 2. The Urne-La Farge-Rozetta association A. Speculate on the relationship of the La Farge and Eleva/Boone series with respect to their occurrences in the landscape. Why do they occur in two places in the toposequence? B. What is the relationship of the Urne series to the La Farge series in the step-terrace sequence - why is it there and how did it form? 3. The Parsons-Dennis association Discuss the differences between the soft series in this landscape that may be attributable to parent material differences. Include discussion on the formative elements in the Soil Taxonomy names that help explain these differences. 4. The Oquaga-Wellsboro-Arnot association A. Use the formative elements of the Soil Taxonomy name to describe the major features of two of the soil series in this landscape. B. One of the main features in this landscape is the presence of fragipans in the low relief positions. Discuss the differences between the upland Arnot and Oquaga series and the Morris and Norwich series, based on what you can tell from their Soil Taxonomy names, as well as what processes you might expect to be going on in the different geomorphic positions.
