SOCI 1002A: Notes Lecture 2 Tuesday, July 8 th , 2008 Groups: - primary conceptual focus of sociology (society, family, friends, co workers) - Want to know how and why, and the effects of acts of people in groups. Only interested in individual as a member or part of such groups When is a Group a Group? - When there is a shared social construction of reality - essence of group is its collective conscience - shared world view; what's right and wrong - no shared world view; not a group General Characteristics of a Group: - clearly be able to identify who is a member of a group and who isn't (non-member) - particular sanctions promoting conformity – to enforce comformity amongst its members and the collective conscience of the group. (social positive forms of non conformity) - Cohesiveness, bonding , and solidarity – bonding amongst members of own groups then to non- members. Some may feel greater solidarity with others in the group but not all, etc. -
