Unformatted text preview: Biochemistry 704 Problem Set 1 Due 02/05/2008 The correct depiction of molecules is essential for the conveyance of accurate information between chemists and biologists. Moreover, incorrect depictions diminish the credibility of the author. Below are figures from recent literature in chemical biology that have errors in their depiction of molecules. In each figure, correct the errors by editing the figure or re-drawing the chemical structures. 1. Nature Structural Biology 2000 , 7 , 663 Figure 1. Inhibition of ICL activity. a , The reaction catalyzed by ICL can be inhibited by b , 3- bromopyruvate and c , 3-nitropropionate. 2. Annu. Rev. Biochem. 2000 , 69 , 934 Figure 7. Native chemical ligation. page 2 of 7 3. Nature Structural Biology 2000 , 7 , 827 Figure 1. The structure of acridine. The molecule is positively charged near neutral pH. Efficient mutagenic derivatives have substitutions at various positions. Two such derivatives, 9-aminoacridine and ICR-364OH, have an amino and alkylating group, respectively, at the 9 position. The three rings form a planar, aromatic molecule. amino and alkylating group, respectively, at the 9 position....
