Nurses have always been portrayed in a certain light when it comes to Hollywood and media. They are portrayed as being a sex object, or the “naughty nurse”, as being just the handmaiden to the doctors, or they are not even seen in some cases but are just used as background filler. “In such popular television medical dramas as “House” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” where collectively there are 20 major physician characters, there are no leading nurse characters at all (Berkowitz, 2014).” Hollywood has only recently begun to portray nurses in a leading role, with shows such as Nurse Jackie and HawthoRNe . I personally have only seen Nurse Jackie and am ashamed at how they portray the nursing profession with the main character being a nurse addicted to pain pills and even at some points, if I remember correctly, doing illegal drugs, all while continuing to provide patient care. And not only was Jackie a drug addict, but she was portrayed as this rude, “battle axe” of a nursing professional. The media has not only
