The unique environment of the city became especially attractive for writers. Bohemianism that started gaining momentum in France in the first half of the nineteenth century was discovered in the writings of San Francisco shortly after the Gold Rush, influencing “sexual and social freedom” of the city’s literature (200). In the early 1940’s another poetry movement appeared in the city – San Francisco Renaissance that became famous for its “constellation of political engagement and literary expression” (205). These practices combined with the post World War II public mood became fertile soil for The Beat Generation; thus, dragged San Francisco into it in the 1950’s. In her essay “The Beat Generation and San Francisco’s Culture of Dissent,” Nancy J. Peters focuses on the description of the Beats, a group
