The Great GatsbyChapter Breakdown· Chapter 1o Nick Carraway, the narrator, has moved back home from New York and is reflecting on the events that happened that led to his loss of faith in humanity.o Nick mentions that Gatsby, even though he represents everything Nick is against, is the one person he admires and looks up to from his time in New York because of his hopeful and romantic outlook on life.o Nick graduated from Yale, fought in WWI, and moved to New York to work in the stock market.o The actual story begins as Nick flashes back to a day shortly after his arrival in NY when he went over to Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s house for dinner; Daisy is Nick’s cousin, and he knows Tom from college.o When Nick arrives, he meets Jordan Baker, a famous professional golfer.o They all have an awkward dinner, and Nick can tell that Tom and Daisy’s relationship is not very solid or loving.o Myrtle Wilson calls Tom twice during dinner, and Nick has a private conversation with Daisy where she expresses her unhappiness in her life with Tom.o When Nick return home, he sees Gatsby standing at the end of the dock reachingfor the green light across the bay.· Chapter 2o Thinking that he is going to lunch with Tom in New York, Nick rides the train with Tom, but they stop in the Valley of Ashes.o Tom talks about cars with George Wilson for a minute, and then he introduces Nick to his mistress, Myrtle Wilson (George’s wife).o Tom tells Myrtle to meet them at their secret apartment in New York.o Before getting to the apartment, they buy a dog from a man on the street.o Even though he is uncomfortable, Nick goes up to the apartment with them for amini party.o They all get very intoxicated, and things get out of hand.o Because she repeats Daisy’s name, Tom breaks Myrtle’s nose.o Nick winds up leaving and is at the train station at 4 a.m. wanting to go home.· Chapter 3o Nick starts this chapter by describing how elaborate and over the top Gatsby’s parties are.o Unlike any of the other guests at Gatsby’s parties, Nick actually gets an invitation.o Nick goes to the party and starts talking to Jordan Baker.
o Not realizing it, Nick actually meets Mr. Gatsby, and Gatsby is very welcoming and hospitable.
