Kurt Humphreys English Close Reading November 4, 2007 Ignorance is Bliss “The Company of Wolves” is a short story that parallels that of the fairy tale “Little Read Riding Hood” but with a unique twist at the end of the story. It begins with a girl that lives in a cold mountainous region that is dominated by the threat of werewolves. We are introduced to the werewolves who are especially worse during the winter and who are unable to reason like other fairy tale creatures. Because these wolves are so evil they have made the town they surround tough and hardened. These people grow up fast and live short lives due to the harsh conditions and the wolves that haunt the town. However this young girl has been protected from these hardships that are present. “She has been too much loved to feel scared,” even when she is presented with such evils as the wolf. The protagonist of this story who is unafraid of these wolves ventures into the woods that house these evil creatures. She insists on carrying a basket of goods to her
