Dr. Nabila Shamim Page 1 Unit Operation CHEG 3023 Homework 2 Due September 28, 2016 Please upload the graded homework 2 under 1e Ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems: 1. A Venturi meter with an inlet diameter of 0.6 m is designed to handle 6 m 3 /s of standard air. What is the required throat diameter if this flow is to give a reading of 0.10 m of alcohol in a differential manometer connected to the inlet and the throat? The specific gravity of alcohol may be taken as 0.8. 2. A dam holds a reservoir of water that drives a turbine powered generator to provide hydroelectric power. Water flows from a pipe in the bottom of the dam 220ft below the top of the water through the turbine at a rate of 1650 lbm/s and then empties out of the turbine outlet pipe (3 in schedule 40) into the river below. How much horse power can the turbine theoretically produce? Also draw the schematic diagram.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
