Managing Change "There is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things. What is change? The term change refers to any alteration which occurs work environment of an organization.“ Change, as a process, is simply modification of the structure or process of a system. It may be good or bad, the concept is descriptive only.“

Types of Change There are three types of change you need to be aware of, and these are: Developmental Change ; this occurs when you recognise a need to make improvements to an existing situation. You aren’t recreating the entire workflow but are instead refining it to make it better. Transitional Change ; this happens when you recognise the need to implement a completely new course of action. You have a set plan for making this change happen and are able to control the implementation process over a designated period of time. Transformational Change : This isn’t necessarily something that you control as much as you recognise and survive. A new process or “norm” creates itself as a result of the failure of another and usually takes its own shape. You can, of course, refine it as it develops but it is not usually planned.

Forces for Change There are a number of factors both internal and external which affect organizational functioning. Any change in these factors necessitates change in an organization. The more important factors are as follows :

A. External Forces External environment affects the organizations both directly and indirectly. The organizations do not have any control over the variables in such an environment. Accordingly, the organization cannot change the environment but must change themselves to align with the environment. A few of these factors are :

A. External Forces 1. Technology : Technology is the major external force which calls for change. The adoption of new technology such as computers, telecommunication systems and flexible manufacturing operations have profound impact on the organizations that adopt them.
