From the rock n roll of the70’s and 80’s, pop and hip-hop of the 90’s and early 2000’s and finally, many different populargenres of the generation we now live in. Music is a way for people to express themselves. Aswith many other types of expression, music sometimes bring up social and economical issues oftoday. Although most people are interested in the beat and or lyrics, some songs actually have adeeper meaning than we think. This is true of J. Cole’s song “Crooked Smile”. The song“Crooked Smile” by rapper J. Cole confronts the problem of impractical expectations of womenwith the song’s extraordinary lyrics, expansive metaphors and positive tone.Throughout the entire song, you can hear J. Cole spit some extraordinary lyrics. One caneasily see that the song is about imperfections such as a “crooked smile” and how suchimperfections do not limit someone to what they can accomplish. It is not hard to tell that J. Colewas speaking primarily to women. He says in this line, “to all the women with the flaws, knowits hard my darling.” From this line, you can see that J. Cole has empathy for women. From thoseexact same lines, it is also noticeable that J. Cole can relate to women and what they are goingthrough. This ultimately draws the audience’s attention and spark some critical thinking as towhat J. Cole is trying to portray with this song. Cole goes on by stating, “You keep falling victimcause you’re insecure.” This rings true in the world today because a lot of women are very much
