Thurgood MarshallThis research paper will be about the formerAssociate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Thurgood Marshall.He served from October 1967 until October 1991. Marshall was the Court's96th justiceand is best known for being itsfirstAfrican-Americanjustice. Well before coming to judge status, Marshall was a lawyer who had a high success rate in arguing before the Supreme Court. He is also well known for the victory in theBrown v. Board of Education case.Born on July 2ndof 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland; Thurgood Marshall was raised by his two parents: William and Norma Marshall. His father, William, was the grandson of a slave and worked as a steward at a club while his mother, Norma,was a kindergarten teacher. Growing up, Thurgood’s father would listen to local courthouse cases and return home to talk about them with Thurgood and his brother. This is primarily how Thurgood became involved in law. Thurgood, his brother, and father would viciously argue at the dinner table almost every night about the cases that his father brought home from the local courthouse.Years later after graduating from high school in 1926, Marshall later attended Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania. There he had classmates
such as renowned poet Langston Hughes and famous jazz singer Cab Calloway. Marshall graduated from Lincoln University in 1930 with honors earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in American literature and philosophy.Soon after graduating from Lincoln, Thurgood applied to the University of Maryland Law School.
