Qualitative Analysis Laboratory Goal: To determine the composition of a mixture and decide if the mixture contains one or more reagents. Objective : By following the procedure one can take the several different compounds and run the appropriate experiments to determine if the composition is positive or negative for the specific reagents. Introduction : Determining the composition of a mixture can be very important, not only for chemist, but also for companies. Companies that might be selling a chemical product that could be lethal to a human if ingested. The ability to make the carry out procedures and make qualitative assumptions about the make up of a mixture is a most have knowledge for the industrialized world that we live in. A real world example of this would be determining the composition of an old paint. By taking a sample of the paint and running a series of experiments, a health code inspector can determine if the paint has lead in it. Paint containing lead is extremely poisonous, and the knowledge of being able to identify reagents in a mixture is vital. Materials: Pb 2+ , Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , K 2 CrO 4 , PbCrO 4, Hg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cu(NO 3 ) 2 , HCl, Zn 2+ , CoS ZnS, (NH 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 , CaC 2 O 4 , S, O, Mg(NO 3 ) 2 , NaOH, Mg(OH) 2 , NH 3 , Cu(NH 3 ) 4 2+ , Co(NO 3 ) 2 , Co(SCN) 4 2- , Fe 3+ , Fe(NO 3 ) 3 , KSCN, FeSCN 2+ , HgCl 4 2- , test tubes, litmus paper, thioacemamide Procedure: Before starting the experiment, the person should have gathered all of the necessary materials. There were nine parts to the experiment; each was similar in nature, however each individual experiment was used to test for a specific chemical. The first test that was run was the Chromate Test for Pb 2+ . The first test was started by properly labeling the test tube one, and added 6 drops of 0.10 M solutions of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , and then several drops of 0.1 M K 2 CrO 4 should be added. After performing test one, the experimenter would move onto test to which is an Acidic Sulfide Test for Hg 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ . This test was first started by gathering two different test tubes. Then 6 drops of 0.10 M of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 were placed in one of the test tubes and 6 drops of 0.10 M of Cu(NO
