US History - Since 1865 Quiz III Role of Women in WWI and WWII The two world wars may have had a more dramatic effect on the influential role of women in today’s society than any event of the past century. Many men, before 1914, would say that, “women can do many things, as long as it’s around the house”. Before WWI women were seen as homemakers and were expected to do “women’s work”. The two wars would shine new light on what women were capable of doing in diverse fields of endeavor if given the opportunity. During both World War I and World War II, women were called on, by necessity, to do work and to take on roles that were outside their traditional gender expectations. Women did, for the duration of both World Wars, take on jobs that were traditionally regarded as skilled 'men's' work. “Do the job HE left behind.” World War I brought labor shortage and war needs that women moved into to fill (Norton, 426).
