Elementary Sign Language Instructor: Jim Lipsky Deaf Community Interaction Curtis Pride Tonight I went to a Deaf event at the Curry Student Center . The speaker was Curtis Pride, the first full-season deaf player in the history of major league baseball . He has played for the Montreal Expos, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and even the Boston Red Sox . He spoke tonight about his accomplishments , his journey to success , and his perseverance in order to achieve his goals in major league baseball . First in the presentation, there was a short video introduction of the speaker . It featured clips of Curtis Pride playing baseball as well as background information . He was 95% deaf at birth . He grew up oral, and was mainstreamed into regular public hearing schools . Pride later talked about the hardships of going to hearing schools . He would sit in the front of the class as to better read his teacher’s lips , but often his teachers would move around the room as they were teaching
