Guest Lecture – Psychic Lecture 09/29/06 PSI Phenomena - Anomalous processes of information or energy transfer - Processes that are currently unexplained by known processes Varieties - Extrasensory Perception o Telepathy (thought transfer) o Clairvoyance (perception of object / event) o Precognition (perception of a future event) - Psychokinesis o Mental influence over physical events College professors’ belief in PSI - 66% - “ESP is an established fact or likely possibility” o Natural scientist - 55% o Social scientist – 66% o Arts / Humanities – 77% o Psychologists – 34% - “ESP is impossible” o Non psychologists – 2% o Psychologists – 34% Why psychologists are skeptical 1. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence (previous claims are false or from bad memories) 2. PSI is more extraordinary for psychologists 3. Don’t know the evidence 4. Physics envy – Slam “fringe” areas of research 5. Aware of cognitive limitations – disregard all anecdotal evidence
