State of the art psychotherapy - Anxiety disorders? - How do we become anxious neurologically? o LC turns on Amygdala o Amygdala causes hypothalamic-pituary axis to create cortisol o Cortisol turns off hypothalamic-pituary axis o Cortisol turns off hippocampus which in turn turns of hypothalamic- pituary axis - Separating baby rats from their mothers soon after birth has lifelong effects on how much anxiety they feel and how poorly they can regulate it o Its as if the body finds a way to set the level of cortisol during the first 6 months - Medicating anxiety o 1. Barbituates – CNS depressants, shuts down nervous system o 2. Benzodiazepines – GABA agonists (GABA calms down system) 3. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - Cognitive model of the emotions o Event Thought(Interpretation) Emotion - People interpreting events that create anxiety -
