Alyx Kunz 9-17-16 INTS 101 The film “Art Saved My Life” film is a documentary. The film maker’s objective is to demonstrate the power art has on lives through the testimonials of a variety of artists. Artists varying from rappers, painters, musicians, yoga instructors and a health coach. This film allowed these artists to share their personal stories and their experiences. This film portrayed living examples of how art can heal, transform, determine and even save someone's life. Art is more than a hobby; it is a lifestyle that changes lives for the better. By producing the interview of the artists themselves versus reporting about their life’s second hand. It allowed their story to be shared fully and in the way they wished to present it. If a reporter had interviewed them and then reported a story about them, it would have been a different film. Parts of their life could be cut out or presented in a way to appeal to the reporter’s bias. In the film the interviews of the artists are shown as one continuous take in most cases. This avoids the ability for the editor to cut certain parts of the interview to form bias message from these artists. The wide variety of artists portrayed in the film allowed the film to have a variety of stories with many different experiences. These artists included musicians, painters, health coaches, hula hoopers, performers, poets and yoga instructors. The film would not have the same effect on the audience if they had interviewed thirteen painters consecutively. Each artist shared their story of how art positively impacted their life’s when they were faced with a challenge. Kunz 1

The film maker’s loose definition of art gave the film a wider audience and allowed them to film multiple stories. By featuring many different forms of art the film makers were able to represent a wider variety of artists and their craft. This then reaches a wider audience and allows for their message, that art can heal, transform, determine and even save someone's life, to reach more individuals. I was surprised to see that they defined a health coach as an artist, I understand that her diet can consist of a variety of colors thus resembling art. However, I did not believe that health coaches were artists before watching this video. Now I see the many perspectives of the definition of an artist. The use of details that appealed to the senses enhanced the film greatly. By showing the art created by the painter while he spoke of his life put meaning to the words. Showing the musician playing his instrument before he shared his story helped build his character in the mind of the audience before he even began his story. If the artists had simply been interviewed and followed by the next interview the film would have not inspired the audience to the extent that it did. In some parts of the film the interview seemed to reach a standstill at which they could have added more artistic features such as the artist interacting with other artists or the artist’s life outside of their craft such as their family and friends.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
