Tuesday -9/29/15  Love and Basketball -Gina Prince Bythewood    -Entered the domain in 2000- a lot of young girls playing sports right after the olympics in At- lanta and the women’s world cup when the US women won Not a lot of interest in black women making films Black women scholars writing about the tradition We now have a body of work for black women film makers Title 9    -Love & Basket ball entered in this context Athletics Means equal opportunity for access  Athletic programs at schools produce a lot of money    -If you give access for females then it cuts down on their money Not just for athletics but equal opportunity for access Females in grad programs drastically increased    -Females are now the majority in some of these fields  The challenges to title 9     -If the young girl got pregnant she had to stop going to school but who got her pregnant did  not    -Arrested a young girl who protested not being able to go to graduation  Lawyers started fighting title 9    -Women could now stay at H.S. if they were pregnant By 2000 there were a lot of young girls in hs watching this film every day before every practice    -It had a strong following Love & Basketball made money  Prince Bythewood got her degree from UCLA    -Not allowed into the film program as an undergraduate     -She got a letter from Bill Cosby (very influential at the time) so she got into the film program  She is married to Reggie Wright Also did “beyond the lights”    -Cheaply done The film “Waiting to excel”     -Had a very large audience    -Word of mouth can either kill or elevate a particular film     -Particular audiences recognized that for a film to stay in the theaters it had to make money in  the first 4 days of its release    -People went to keep in the theater and because they loved the novel (Above) ties back in with Prince Bythewood -“The women of rooster place”    -Picked up an audience on the 2nd night    -Audience increased on that Monday
