Unformatted text preview: Weathering, Soils, and Erosion How does weathering happen? • Weathering is the break down of parent materials (rocks, sediments) ★ Physical Weathering • Mechanical breakdown of Rocks • Surface area ✴ Increased surface area = potential for faster chemical weathering • Examples • Frost Wedging • the growth of crystals, ie: freezing water into ice, causes much force • Talus is the product at the bottom of mountains where the rocks have fallen off due to freez- ing and thawing • Unloading and Exfoliation • Enchanted rock • rocks under the surface has reached equilibrium with all the pressure, when the pressure is taken away due to erosion, there is excess pressure the rock needs to get rid of and it goes aligator-skinned (AKA exfoliation) • Isostacy (a factor of buoyancy) • Root Growth • agents of physical and chemical weathering • as roots grow, they push and expand the rocks • Products • Smaller rock particles (sediment) • Increased surface area ★ Chemical Weathering...
