Study Guide: Exam 3 Pay attention to the human situation Chapter 12: 1) Understand the hierarchy of gene expression involved in Drosophila development and how this is established in the early embryo. - homeotic (hox) genes: o establish segment identity o mutations can cause a body part to grow where it is normally not seen in the wild type o all hox genes encode TF’s/ Transcription Regulators 3 Head segments 3 body segments 8 thorax segments o 8 hox genes ---> 2 gene complexes (per chromosome) - homeobox: o helix-turn helix bd AP axis 1) Maternal Effect a. Bicoid (BCD) – Anterior Zygotically active: required for segmentation 2) Gap Genes – fomation of contiguous blocks of segments (mutants = gaps) 3) Pair-Rule Genes – pair-rule mutants are missing part of each pair of segments 4) Segment-polarity Genes – affect patterning. Mutants display defects in segment polarity 5) Homeobox Genes – Determines fate of each segment (alter the appearance not segment # DV axis - some maternal effect ---> establish identity of dorsoventral polarity Drosophila
