The State of States 2.1 Sovereign State – own and operated by the government of those places. Antarctica is not a state but divided by different states. Purple oldest states in the world before 1800, United States is one of the youngest state but oldest sovereign states. Ex: China, Iran, most of European. Most of Africa, USSR are much younger 50-60 years. People would identify themselves with other groups of people like them. Ex: ethics, tribes. Monarchs. Aka Kings, queens, emperors. Sovereign ruler/Sovereign of the peoples. NOT a place but people from before. 2.2 State – on the international level it’s Country. Legally defined territory that has been recognized by other states. 193 states in the world. Nation – group of people who share a common culture. Unlimited number of nations. Bunch of people with common culture. Ex: Cherokee, Aztec, Zulu (Africa), Scots, Persians (Iran), Mongolians. French, Japanese, German. 2.3 Nation – State: People who share a common culture and rule themselves in a defined political area. Ex: Germany, France, Dutch, Belgians, Italians, Iran, China, Japan (99% Japanese), Korea (100% Korean people). 2.4 Is every State a Nation – State? No. United States is not a Nation – State because it’s composed of many different cultures, people, religions. Ex: India, Sudan (north: Islamic, south: Christian). Not all States are Nation – States because some have ongoing civil war.
