Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Holden swears, drinks alcohol, and behaves like an adult to make himself appear mature, but his lack of self-awareness and juvenile worldview prevents him from truly maturing. Holden believes actions the media has designated as “adult” will show maturity, but he only begins to mature at the end of the novel when he realizes his idealized view of society and childhood is unrealistic. Here are some questions for you to think about. In response to the questions, categorize your answers as strengths or weaknesses. In this column, capture some ideas for revision. What changes will you need to make? Clarity (clearness of thought) and Specificity (explicitness) Do I use vague words like “interesting,” “negative,” “exciting,” etc.? What could I change it to be more clear?
