Constructive Case 1. Introduction a. Good morning/afternoon b. Today we will be debating whether or not this artist should receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. c. Because of the controversial nature of this portfolio, it will provoke important conversation between viewers. Because that conversation has the potential lead to change within American society, this artist should receive a grant from the NEA. 2. Contentions listed a. The artist’s portfolio is important for Americans to see because it provokes conversation about societal roles through very relevant symbols. b. The subject matter of the art could be interpreted as anti-American, deeming it too controversial to be eligible for a government grant, but this actually makes the art more worthy because controversy leads to discussion on the issues presented in the portfolio, which has the potential to lead to change. 3.
