Period 5 January 3, 2005 Activity Points: Write-up 1. The activity I chose was to read the book Sophie’s World  by Jostein  Gaarder.   2. I chose to read Sophie’s World  because I am interested in philosophy,  which is what the book is about, and it is related to many of the topics we  have learned about in class. Also, my cousin read the book and  recommended it to me.  3. This activity added to my understanding of world history by helping me to  see what people thought about important philosophical questions during  the times we have studied. By knowing the answers philosophers gave to  the philosophical questions of different time periods, I can see what  society’s main values were and what the environment was like. For  example, in class we studied Plato and the philosophers of his time briefly.  This book goes more in-depth about his views, which were that everything  has an ideal form in another reality and that what we see is an imperfect  copy of the ideal form. This lets me see that new ideas were coming into  society and changes in philosophy and the world were happening because  of these ideas. Also, by seeing that there were so many philosophers  during a certain period, such as that of Plato’s and Socrates’ time, I can  tell that philosophy and ideas flourished in society during that time period.
