APUSH- Period 4 November 1, 2006 The American Political Tradition- Hofstadter on Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson’s Character Traits/Leadership Qualities Jefferson believed in equality for all men because of reasoning, not feeling. Jefferson was pragmatic and though he wanted to abolish slavery, he recognized that it was useless to push for it because the public did not want it. Jefferson was very generous and would give money to beggars, even if he had to borrow it. He found time to try almost everything, including inventing, observing, measuring, and architecture. He was a pacifist, nationalist, and felt strong parochial loyalties. He did not like controversy, power, or publicity. He believed education should be wide-spread. Jefferson valued people over wealth. Thomas Jefferson’s Political Philosophy, life, people, etc. Jefferson was born into wealth and received an enlightened education, framing his political beliefs.
