This course will take us from Mendels observations, which led to the basic laws of genetics, to the new sciences of genomics, gene therapy, and gene manipulation. Terms Genes are what we now call the segregating units that Mendel discovered, and alleles are the differing forms of a gene that control traits. Genotype (the exact alleles present) vs phenotype (observable traits) of an organism. Mutation = heritable change in a gene resulting in a new allele.
